I have two questions for the group concerning detection circuits used on
spectrum analyzers:
1. With no other changes to gain, bandwidth or transducer factors, would an
AVG detector provide a lower noise floor than a QP detector?
2. Which of these two detectors has the longer time-constant (charge &
discharge)

Ralph:
AVERAGE will yield a lower noise floor and has a longer time constant.
BTW, AVERAGE is a little slippery. It may be created by a long time-constant
detection circuit, or it might be a digital average. And you want the average
of the linear units, not the average of the logarithmic units.
