Can anybody suggest a standard which describes how to perform magnetic field
emission testing from DC to at least 500Hz in addition to a guide as to what
instrumentation to use? Ideally we would like a plot of the field against its
level, similar to that from a receiver as in electric field emission testing.

A good, inexpensive start is the EMCO 7604 Loop antenna, but it only covers 20
Hz to 500 kHz. Well, it does go lower, but then the antenna factor approaches
infinity. Their 6502 is an active loop, but is specified only for 10 kHz
through 30 MHz.

A.H. Systems makes an SAS-560 passive loop, rated 20 Hz to 2 MHz. They also
have an active loop, the SAS-563B, that's rated from 1 kHz to 30 MHz.

Of course, a decent spectrum analyzer is suggested, as well as a low-noise
pre-amp.

If you really need to go down to DC, consider getting a magneto-resistive
sensor built into a standard DIP. The Honeywell HMC-1001 sensor costs about
$25, and will give you a DC output voltage proportional to the H-field. It can
easily read the Earth's field (<.5 Gauss) and can resolve down to around 25
milligauss.
