Hello Amund, UL 60950-1 is based on IEC 60950-1. There are quite a few national deviations that fall into a number of broad categories. Since the UL and CSA standards are harmonized, these deviations are applicable for both the United States and Canada.
1. The requirements of the United States National Electrical Code and the Canadian Electrical Code have been incorporated. These can be the most significant changes. UL 60950-1 contains Annex NAE to cover these requirements. This affects everything from overcurrent protection to power cord specifications. The North American electrical codes are extremely different from European electrical codes. 2. Components with only UL/CSA approval are acceptable even if they have not be tested to the relevant IEC standard. 3. A few test requirements from the older UL and CSA standards have been carried over. For example, the tests of 2.6.3.4 are a bit more rigorous under UL 60950-1. 4. North American telephone systems requirements have resulted in a few deviations for TNV circuits. The vast majority of the UL standard matches the IEC standard. The electrical code requirements affect mostly the connection to line voltage. UL 60950-1 is probably one of the few UL standards that has been harmonized with the IEC standards. There are a few others, such as UL 61010. However, many have not been harmonized and there will be problems with that process. UL has looked at IEC 60335, but there are too many specific requirements for motors in the National Electrical Code and the number of national deviations would overwhelm a harmonized standard.
