Hi Peter, In the two cases I know if, the mobile phone had to be in close physical contact with the device that failed. If a device suffered a hard failure like that from a mobile phone 30 cm (about one foot) or more away, it would not survive at all in the noisy environment we have. I can think of many sources that are MUCH more intense than that.
I know that EFT generated 75 feet away away on a different circuit has tripped GFCI's, but that is a soft failure. I would not put a computer on a GFCI circuit as the leakage current from the EMI filter can bias the GFCI just to the point of tripping. I can't think of a situation where a mobile phone would be in close contact with a GFCI that was in active use. I would be interested to hear of such cases.
