We have similar issue on some portable electronic products with rubber paint
coating.  If you continue to use it, the rubber paint gives a good feeling to
the users.  However, it you do not use it for a period of time, the coating
gets wet and sticky.  The users cannot remove it.  It appears to be a common
issue on rubber paint coating and happens on most of products as far as I
know.  Can this test method or other test give some indication how soon to
have such bad effect.

testing
for an outside plastic receptacle to SAE J2527, Standard for “Accelerated
Exposure of Automotive Exterior Materials Using A Controlled Irradiance
Xenon-Arc Apparatus” (which I’m told replaced SAE 1960). This standard
gives the operating procedures, but not the exposure amounts or limits.
         
        The accumulated exposure requested by our customer was 2500kJ, which 
took
approximately 12 weeks to occur. I’m told that this figure was obtained by
reviewing automotive standards(possibly General Motors) for weathering of
painted surfaces in extreme climates(Florida, IIRC), but we used it on the
exposed plastic material. 
        The pass/fail criteria was based upon the testing lab measuring colour
changes in CIELAB color difference units, with limits specified by the
customer. 
        I believe ASTM D2244 gives a test method for that.

        I have a customer pulling a request out of an area very near his rear 
pants
pocket. The goal is to understand the color fastness of a molded plastic after
artificial weathering – exposure to a Xenon lamp for X number of days. I can
get the test done but the client hasn’t specified and doesn’t know a test
duration and the referenced standard doesn’t provide information on how to
deduce a test length. The customer has no input on this and the closest
reference I have is the US militaries Solar loading tests for 10 days for
occasional use outdoors.
         
        Additionally the referenced standard is for paints and varnishes rather 
than
molded plastics – does anyone have 1) and typical test duration, and 2) is
there a more appropriate standard for color fastness of molded plastics?
