Some people swear by it, others at it. I find it works for me.

I would say, 'if in doubt, include'. It isn't often that a report is 
criticized for having too much data (although I have one colleague who 
does this regularly and it's very annoying to get around a thousand data 
items to prove a point; you can't see the wood for the trees).

Exactly; you won't ever be asked why you included something, but if you 
leave it out...

What instruments do you want to get the data from? Usually, the manual 
tells you how to do it.
