Cody,

Here is what we have in our lab:

480VAC 3 phase 60Hz (277VAC Line to N) from the power company comes into our
building

Inside our building, we have three huge transformers that step down the 480VAC
to:

208VAC 3 phase Y (115VAC Line to N)

230VAC 3 phase Delta

240/120 Center Tap (like the power you have at your house)

For 50Hz, we have a 75KW 50 Hz Motor Generator that outputs 380VAC 3 phase Y
(230VAC Line to N)

Our company makes a lot of instruments that operate at 230VAC both 60hz and 50
hz. Some of our customers power our instruments with 208VAC which can be 10%
low or 187.8VAC. So we have to test for proper operation down to 185VAC on
the low end and 250VAC on the high end.

To vary the voltage we use a huge 40 amp autotransformer.

We also have a California Instruments programmable power supply where you can
set the output to almost anything. The model we have is only good for single
phase up to 18 amps. The cost for just the power supply was around $12K.

This is what we have and so far it has met all our power needs.

The Other Brian

Subject: Testing EUT at 110V 60 Hz and 220V 50 Hz

Hi all,

How and what do United States labs typically do (use) to power EUTs that run
at 110V 60 HZ and at 220V 50Hz. Also are there other power voltage/frequency
combinations I should be considering besides those two mentioned.

Thanks,

Cody Miller
