For NEBs stuff - as you already know, there are stringent structural
requirements for some types of end-use.

As for GR-CORE and IT safety - there are the obvious flammability and
electrical insulation requirements for plastics; and UL60950-1 has some
additional requirements for really big pieces of plastics. And the
Di-electric withstand and leakage current could be more onerous for some
applications.

I had a customer that put one of my power supplies into an ABS and then
into a polycarb chassis - he had some ESD and surge immunity problems with
his stuff that had not been problem with a metallic construction. Mostly
because he changed to a Class II construction and removed the ground wire
- what a maroon.

I do not know about the effect on CISPR-type emissions - could be a big
mess for some stuff.

Subject: Polycarbonate Chassis
Importance: Low

Hello Group,
I have been asked to investigate the possibility of changing one of our
chassis' material from Steel to some type of polycarbonate, the motivation
is strictly cost.
There will be some metalized shielding on the inside. I don't have all the
specification on the shielding properties at this time.
The product is roughly a 1Ux12"x 12" ITE product AC or 48VDC ~35W power
two port RJ45 Ethernet for UTP. FCC, UL, NEBS Type 2 and 4.
I am concerned about the ESD and EMI aspects as well as other issues such
as grounding.
I will be interested in hearing any horror stories or outright restriction
or test hurdles that maybe encountered.
Cordially,
