Hi Ryan,
You should also be concerned about safety in general where changing from a steel enclosure to plastic has fire enclosure and grounding integrity implications. And more importantly, doing so would have NEBS impacts (pardon the pun) especially relating to vibration and earthquake structural integrity issues that would almost certainly arise. And, the cost and consumed time of NEBS retesting alone should be stimulus enough to resist such a change. As for horror stories, the horrific videos that I’ve seen from the effect of NEBS testing of steel enclosed products should weigh in on that decision. I do not, but does anyone have any weblinks to some of those videos? I know I’ve only scratched the surface with this subject, but I hope it helps in the decision making. There will be some metalized shielding on the inside. I don’t have all the specification on the shielding properties at this time. The product is roughly a 1Ux12”x 12” ITE product AC or 48VDC ~35W power two port RJ45 Ethernet for UTP. FCC, UL, NEBS Type 2 and 4. I am concerned about the ESD and EMI aspects as well as other issues such as grounding. I will be interested in hearing any horror stories or outright restriction or test hurdles that maybe encountered.
