Agreed… in the scenario of a smoking adapter in a moving vehicle… the
visual can be convincing..

That’s why you get your company legal beagles involved. They’re the best
friends I have in these discussions. Can’t help with suggesting standards
(I’m an EMC guy), but get a moment with your legal folks. Arguments should
vanish. I know ours make me look like a pussycat on the subject of regulatory
compliance, and I’m not noted for backing down. J

Thanks Ghery I agree with you but logic does not always play into these
decisions for individuals who are not safety engineers..I have certainly posed
this scenario but it always helps if there are Regulatory requirements as this
ends all arguments………..

Ask those who are pushing back how they plan on defending your employer in a
lawsuit if something does happen. “No, your honor, it was our opinion that
safety approvals were not required.” “Judgment for the plaintive in the
amount of $XX,XXX,XXX”

No thanks.

Hello everyone,

We are looking at a car adapter/ charger for one of our products and I wanted
to get some opinions on what the possible mandatory regulatory requirements
might be.

For past chargers we required the following for North America

UL Listing to UL2089

CSA Approval to: CSA Technical Information Letter No.I-35, in addition to one
or more of the following:

CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 107.1, CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 107.2. CAN/CSC22.2 No.223.

Our vendor recommended CB approval to IEC60950. And for EMC the e-mark is
required from what I understand.

Questions

1. Does anyone have an opinion if the UL and CSA approvals are legally
required or just good to haves?

2. For the EU are there any safety approvals required or again is a CB
report just a nice to have.

I ask as I am getting push back here about having to get the approvals and I
have made my case why it makes sense, from a liability point of view, to have
approvals but it would be helpful to know if these types of devices must have
Safety certifications.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to opinions……..
