Colleagues, [Seems EU commission is getting into Kanban scheduling?!]
Today is of course the first day of effectivity of the new Machinery Directive, 2006/42/EC. And, just-in-time: published this morning (29 Dec 2009 Brussels) in the Official Journal of the European Union, 2009/C 321/09. The new date for cessation of presumption of conformity of EN 954-1 is 31 Dec 2011. http://eur-lex.europa.eu/JOHtml.do?uri=OJ:C:2009:321:SOM:EN:HTML "The date of cessation of presumption of conformity of the superseded standard, initially fixed on 28.12.2009, has been postponed for two years." Details: * The current standard is listed as "EN ISO 13849-1:2008 Safety of machinery - Safety-related parts of control systems - Part 1: General principles for design (ISO 13849-1:2006) " * The correction is also listed: "EN ISO 13849-1:2008/AC:2009" * The superseded standards are listed as EN ISO 13849-1:2006 and EN 954-1:1996. * In other words, for the next two years, can use either EN 954-1:1996, or EN ISO 13849-1:2008, or EN ISO 13849-1:2006. * After 31 Dec 2011 only the 2008 edition of EN ISO 13849-1 gives presumption of conformity. This publication actually resurrects THREE standards from the old MD: EN 954-1 and (perhaps appropriately?) two standards for "Refuse collection vehicles" [garbage trucks]. Many jokes to be made there, surely. (DG Enterprise actually "buried the lead", the refuse vehicle standards, EN 1501-1 and -2, are listed first - numerically.) Today's list supplements the list published on 18th December 2009. Nevertheless, there are still many standards formerly listed for the old MD that have not yet been listed for the new directive. They can still be used but do apparently do not officially give "presumption of conformity". Many of these are Cenelec standards (Electrical, EN 6xxxx series). Notable examples include EN 62061 and even EN 60204-1. MD 2006/42/EC: http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:C:2009:309:0029:0065:EN:PDF PED 97/23/EC: http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:C:2009:309:0066:0079:EN:PDF Regarding the MD list, as Doug reported yesterday, it still does not include EN 954-1. (Another OJ publication is expected on December 29th. And I thought I was leaving my Xmas shopping late.) EN ISO 13849-1 (2008/AC:2009) is listed, as is EN 61800-5-2 (2007) [for drives]. There are very few CENELEC (EN 6xxxx) standards listed. Presumably Cenelec is still working on the process of reviewing and updating for compatibility with the new MD. Notable omisions include EN 60204-1 and EN 62061. (Does anyone have any information about schedule for listing the "missing" standards in the OJ - those that were listed for 98/37/EC but not for 2006/42/EC?) So, if EN 60204-1 does not give "presumption of conformity" to the new MD, should we be using hydraulic power or steam until CENELEC has a standard for this new-fangled electrical machinery?! Back to the future. Well no, in fact, per Cenelec website, there is EN 60204-1:2006+A1:2009 which is related to 2006/42/EC. It just isn't yet listed in the OJ. Last week's list is only 37 pages, the old list was 57 pages; albeit there was some dead wood in the old list that may account for some of the differences. EN 1010-1 and EN 1010-2 are not listed. I have not had time to go through the list to see what else is missing. Still, at last we actually have many of the machinery standards (esp. Type C) that were valid for 98/37/EC officially listed for 2006/42/EC. Until last week we just had the few that were listed in September. HOWEVER, a huge number - most - are either new 2009 editions, or at least have a 2009 amendment. I presume that in most cases, the amendment is just to reference the new MD but maybe some will have technical changes required to address the new MD. Does anyone have any information about this? It would be nice if CEN & Cenelec were to publish list of any standards that actually have had "real" changes. It would be very expensive for manufacturers to buy a set of new standards just to see a few lines have changed in Annex ZZ. Effective last Friday, anyone are signing a DoC or DoI to the new directive, the versions to use are those in the new list. (And if you are still using 98/37/EC, better hurry up!)
