Jim,

Table 19 of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, CSA C22.1-09 shows “CMP”
as a “CSA Type Designation.” The table’s title is “Conditions of use
and maximum allowable conductor temperature of wires and cables other than
flexible cords, portable power cables, and equipment wires.” The conditions
of use for the communication cable entries reads, “For use in communication
circuits when exposed, concealed, or used in raceways; indoors in dry or damp
locations; or in ceiling air handling plenums.”

Thus, if it has a Canadian certification and “CMP” type designation, it
looks to be “CMP” cable for Canada.

Subject: plenum rated cable for Canada

News groupers,

We have run into a situation where some cable may be marked incorrectly, or
perhaps not be sufficient for the application. I need to get some information.

In Canada, a flame/smoke rating system of FT-1 through FT-6 is used. (Perhaps
CSA C22 No. 03-M-2001)

In the U.S., a plenum (CMP) rating is designated in the identification on the
cable.

Does anyone have a comparison chart or can you give me direction in verifying
(or not) that FT-6 is the same as plenum rated?

The cable is marked FT-4, CMP. Before I go to the vendor, I need a bit of
education.

Thank you.
