I received a number of replies to my query. It appears there is some justification for the requirement having to do with accessories, fire enclosures, material construction, and source of power. Most interesting was the pointer to the UL PAG that highlights the OSM Decision regarding this issue.
My issue was a bit confusing because I have a number of products similar in nature where some have the statements in the manual, some have a specific power supply identified on the product label, and some have neither of these. Ah, the joys of inherited products and approvals. It would appear I have some cleanup to do. Thank you to all who commented. As always, your insights and information are invaluable. CENELEC OSM Decision Sheet (CCA): 1.7.2 (99/2), 4.7 (95/21), 4.7.3.2 (95/24) 1. 7. 2 A Class III equipment with an enclosure made of HB material and using a non-special connector for the AC/DC input has to have a marking stating the following: "For use only with power supply MANUFACTURER, MODEL" This statement shall also be in the user-instructions. Alternative marking: "Use only power supplies listed in the user instructions" or "For applicable power supplies see user instructions" This statement shall also be in the user-instructions. The user instructions must then have a listing of manufacturer and model of the relevant power supplies. Method 2 of 4.7.1 of EN 60950:2000 is recommended. Also, in the UL PAG: Sub-clause 4.7.2.2 clearly allows accessories and peripheral devices to be constructed of HB material if the device is supplied by a Limited Power Source (LPS) as defined in sub-clause 2.5. sub-clause 2.5 provides several options for defining an LPS, a couple of which lend themselves to this host/accessory scenario. If the accessory has a correlation marking or instruction which specifies its use with specific host equipment with known LPS output ports, the combination of the host and accessory as a system can be considered and HB material used, i.e., option 3. The product is usually approved to either ITE (60950) or to A/V (60065) standards. I am curious to know where this requirement comes from, specifically page, paragraph, and rule. I looked in both and did not find it. Can anyone point me to a source? As always, thanks in advance for your help.
