Seriously, CD's are pretty tough. That one must have received very
"special"
handling to yield 17 pieces. BTW, did you ever receive an envelope with a big
official sticker on it that reads "Damaged in Handling by your Postal
Service"? The irony is almost more than I can stand. <g>
Answering myself again, but I wanted to mention that I received my disc in
yesterday's mail, and it was undamaged. However, the mailer that was used was,
indeed, a very poor protector of the disc. I noticed that this year's mailer
is substantially thinner and less protective that the mailer from last year.
I suggest two alternatives. If IEEE wants to continue to physically mail a CD,
then I would prefer that they save the cost of that fancy color artwork and
put that expenditure into a 10-cent bubble-pack mailer instead.
Perhaps a better way would be for us to simply download the content from an
IEEE server and burn our own CD. Every little bit we can save should help the
IEEE meet its (IIRC) $350M budget without any more of those "cost of living"
annual dues increases.
