Allowing for the possibility that I'm belaboring (belabouring?) this "cubic
liter" term a bit too much, I think I see a way that it might be considered a
valid metric.

Certainly, a liter is a liter, and it could be a volume made from 1000 little
cubes, each 1 centimeter on a side. Someone just may have made up a "standard"
block that is 1 liter in volume and 10 centimeters on a side. That would truly
be a cubic liter.

Now once someone had this handy little cube, they could then order a few
thousand copies, giving them a, uhh, big pile of cubic liters. They then might
have proceeded to stuff the interior of their Volvo with as many of these
cubic liters as would fit, thus achieving a relative measure of interior
capacity without the accuracy of CAD and calculus.
