Hi Jody:
Thank you for bringing up the subject that many companies will pay the IEEE and PSES dues. Personally, I enjoyed this company benefit for many years. Here are some arguments to present to management: Product safety engineering is, for now, an academic orphan, rarely taught as a subject in its own right. Most people in the field learn not from academe but >from on-the-job experience and mentoring by others. On-the-job training is good, but not sufficient as it is highly specialized to the specific job. What coverage there is in colleges is nothing like what a product safety engineer will find on the job. PSES meetings and the Symposium are the only places where product safety engineers can learn both product-safety basics and state-of-the-art advances. Safety and compliance engineers tend to be isolated specialists within their own companies. They stand to learn more from counterparts at other companies than from their co-workers. Some of the best safety discussions can only take place one-on-one. At meetings and at the Symposium, members can meet with colleagues from other companies and share their learnings. Obviously, competitors are not free to discuss product specific issues, but even talking in generalities one can learn things that could apply your company's products. The IEEE PSES provides opportunities for personal growth in product safety expertise. Your company should support these opportunities by paying all or some of the dues.
