Doug, glad the IEEE has worked for you: I, however, saw little benefit over member Vs non-member. Those people that know me also know I was very active and threw in countless hours and $$$ of support: it made no difference. I am still looking to help people and organizations, it feels good to help. We can debate more on the pros and cons of the IEEE over a beer or six at the show. Lets be clear, my criticism is specifically aimed at the decision makers, not the troops or participants. Point 1) Cost of running the list server. I called my web host and asked how much this would cost. His reply, Zero $. That translates easily into pounds, Yen, Euros etc. I doubt IEEE compensates the very capable list admin people either. So you see why the threat... join up at over $100 each or we close this service than costs us nothing down... is so vexing! Again, so that we are clear here, the society does not contribute to the list. The list is the awesome resource it is because of the people that participate, and they don't get compensated either! Heck knows, some guys should be.... Any list with these people would be invaluable to be part of. Point 2) why bother, Point 1) sums it up.... My opinion stated earlier remains unchanged, and I hope others voice their opinions in one of the ways respondents to this thread have suggested. At least respond people! If the society makes good it's threat to pull the list support, I hereby offer to host it for free so we can all enjoy it for many years to come WITHOUT being bullied into memberships.
