Not an ad; just a short product review.

I recently bought a Nuwaves HILNAV1-C preamplifier that is customized for the
30 MHz to 1000 MHz range. (The standard HILNAV1 is half the price, but is
rated only for 50 MHz to 1 GHz.) I characterized the gain and found that I got
about 45 dB from 30 MHz to 100 MHz, with a nearly linear drop off to 35 dB at
1000 MHz. The great part is that all this gain also has a Noise Figure of less
than 0.8 dB! The preamp will accept up to about -30 dBm before it starts
saturating, and even 0 dBm doesn't cause spurious products. See

If you need a really hot preamp to help the sensitivity of you biconical or
log periodic, this unit is a great choice. (I set mine up with a couple of
Bias-T's, so that I could power the amp remotely through the coax and still
place it at the antenna. I have some data sheets and construction photos if
anyone is interested.)

Total cost was $550 for the preamp and $150 for a couple of Mini Circuits
Bias-T's, plus a couple of metal project boxes and a wall-wart from the junk
pile. It beats the performance of my HP-8447A by 10 dB.
