Hi, Ed.
The 8447, with "only" 25-28 dB gain, is known for intermod; I'd be intersted
in knowing the IP3 on the 45 dB amp as well as 1 dB compression point..
Some 14 years ago , I replaced the RG213 on a (now defunct) employer's 10
meter OATS in Fountain Valley with LMR-400, which brought the noise floor
under the limit at the 1 GHz high end.. That was good. What was bad. . . it
brought other signals up so much that mixing products from the 8447 they
refused to take out of circuit required 20 dB of attenuation.
No good deed goes unpunished. Aargh!

Subject: Hot Preamplifier
Not an ad; just a short product review.
I recently bought a Nuwaves HILNAV1-C preamplifier that is customized
for the
30 MHz to 1000 MHz range. (The standard HILNAV1 is half the price, but is
rated only for 50 MHz to 1 GHz.) I characterized the gain and found that I got
about 45 dB from 30 MHz to 100 MHz, with a nearly linear drop off to 35 dB at
1000 MHz. The great part is that all this gain also has a Noise Figure of less
than 0.8 dB! The preamp will accept up to about -30 dBm before it starts
saturating, and even 0 dBm doesn't cause spurious products. See
http://www.nuwaves.com
If you need a really hot preamp to help the sensitivity of you
biconical or
log periodic, this unit is a great choice. (I set mine up with a couple of
Bias-T's, so that I could power the amp remotely through the coax and still
place it at the antenna. I have some data sheets and construction photos if
anyone is interested.)
Total cost was $550 for the preamp and $150 for a couple of Mini
Circuits
Bias-T's, plus a couple of metal project boxes and a wall-wart from the junk
pile. It beats the performance of my HP-8447A by 10 dB.
