Probably the cows respond to ground current Ground current creates a voltage gradient in the ground and cows feel this gradient between their feet. Lining up their feet with the equipotential lines in the soil could caused by this effect !

It should perhaps have been published about 16 days later. After all, the HV power lines carry 3-phase AC, and there is very nearly no component of the magnetic field in the direction of the line. One would expect the animals to line up in a direction perpendicular to the line, and reverse their headings every cycle. I am reminded of a very old 'research report' that claimed that homing pigeons were disoriented by MF radio antenna masts and circled round them. It was proposed in response to change the polarization to horizontal, thus inducing the pigeons to make vertical circles, half of which would be below the ground surface. -- OOO - Own Opinions Only.
