I agree totally. It is not a definitive test for a little clipping but it will 
let you know if you are reaching the max output of your amp.

This isn't a very sensitive measure of overload in terms of harmonic
generation. If you do a Fourier analysis of, for example, a sine wave
with 0.5 dB peak clipping, you will see that the harmonic content is
already significant. I did have this documented somewhere, but I can't
find it at present.
