I agree with you totally. Something like this needs to be done and probably should have been done prior to the last release of the Machinery Directive.
Looking at the newest edition of the EN 61010-1 standard, it would appear as if the team is trying to include the necessary Essential Health and Safety Requirements in the Machinery Directive relating to laboratory equipment. Clause 16 was added regarding hazards from application and Clause 17 and Annex J was added regarding Risk Assessment, plus a nice section in clause 7.3.3 Risk Assessment for Mechanical Hazards to Body Parts. Between the EN 61010-1 and the EN ISO 12100 I believe the Essential Health and Safety Requirements would be covered as well as any other such standard. Thanks for your input. Currently listed for electrical safety aspects are 60745 Electrical Tools 60335 Household equipment 60204 Electrical equipment of machines. None of these standards suit laboratory equipment. Many standards are targeted to a specific type of machine, but not to laboratory equipment. No other standards are concerned with laboratory equipment nor is this category excluded in article 1.2(k) and exclusion 2.2(h) is meant for temporary laboratory equipment only. I think that the EC must consider notifying EN 61010 under the Machinery directive, ( requires a risk analysis to be carried out) , or exclude Laboratory equipment from the MD. I think the first solution will be chosen.
