I think Ken is on the right track. Railroad signally and portable equipment both represent areas where there is a higher risk of exposed connections. Receiving a shock from 110V is unpleasant, but it is less likely to lead to significant harm than a 240 V shock. I've contacted 110V a number of times and it seems to have had no ill effects other than starting e-mail messages with bad puns.
