The battery as such is a just a bunch of cells connected in series and parallel; the challenge is in the charger, and all it is a protection circuit. It functions to allow charge and discharge under normal conditions, and to inhibit charging at abnormal bus potentials, and to open if too much current is demanded from the battery.
The protection circuit is necessarily a functional part of a battery designed to connect directly across a dc bus as a replacement for a conventional lead-acid /gel cell battery.
