Dave,
We're familiar with these usual stability requirements and the
mechanical team is confident the equipment is adequate for these
circumstances.
The additional questions arise from direct seismic action and the
additional forces developed during such an event.
It doesn't seem to me that the Euro Zone is particularly active from
the seismic point of view and we've not run into this issue before but are
doing our due diligence here to ensure that no stone is left unturned. The
USGS Seismic history of the earth 1900-2014 website doesn't even include a
reporting zone for Europe.
So maybe this isn't an issue for the MD.

>From the MD Annex I
1.3.1. Risk of loss of stability
Machinery and its components and fittings must be stable enough to avoid
overturning, falling or uncontrolled movements during transportation,
assembly, dismantling and any other action involving the machinery.
If the shape of the machinery itself or its intended installation does not
offer sufficient stability, appropriate means of anchorage must be
incorporated and indicated in the instructions.
I'd interpret this to apply to seismic stability if that could be a concern.

Subject: [PSES] Seismic requirements- Euro Machinery Directive
ok group,
I'm dealing with a large machine which, by design, seems top-heavy.
The issue of stability in an active seismic environment has been raised.
Are there any specific requirements or guidance in Euro standards pertaining
to seismic stability?
