Wow! This antenna is crazy!! I didn’t even know they made ones like this. It is something to consider for sure.
I have looked at all the antennas people have recommended off-line. Right now, I’m favoring the Schwarzbeck VULP 9118 E (not the Special w/folded elements). This has good gain through its frequency range and almost 6dBi at 80Mhz. If these numbers are correct, this should be a huge improvement over our current 20 year old dipole array. One concern I have with this antenna is the elements are quite long (over-all width or 76.4 inches). Mounted 1.5 meters off the floor and in the vertical position the longest element is only about 24 inches from the ground floor. Is this a concern? Alternately, Schwarzbeck makes a “Special” version of this antenna where the longest elements are “folded” which reduces the over-all width of the antenna to only 55 inches. However, I lose about 0.5dBi in gain at 80Mhz. So which is more important? A little gain or keeping the elements away from the ground floor? I appreciate all who have commented on this topic so far. It has been quite the learning experience for me. Antenna Theory was the class I struggled with the most in college. Who would guess someday I would end up being an RF Test/design engineer?? It was part of a 61000-4-3 10V turnkey system. From my memory, the power amplifier for the low end was 250W. Please note the physical sizes of the antenna (http://schwarzbeck.de/Datenblatt/k9129.pdf). (we use a dual ridge horn above 1Ghz). Our goal is to find an antenna which is not too large, yet, will give us good gain at the low end so we can generate 18-20V/m with a 100 watt amplifier. I've looked at the hybrid antennas and they just don't seem to have enough gain at the low end. It appears that most labs that use this type of antenna requires a 200 watt amp. Looks like a Log Periodic has much better gain and should work but we don't want the radials to get too close to the floor. Plus, some of these are nearly 2 meters long. Any suggestions or recommendations? What antenna do you use and how much power do you required to achieve 10V/m with 80% AM modulation without clipping??
