Al Gore did not invent the internet, It is attributed to Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn
who stated regarding Al Gore "No one in public life has been more
intellectually engaged in helping to create the climate for a thriving Internet
than the Vice President."

Title - Product Safety and the New IoT
Abstract - The IoT (Internet of Things) has been around since Al Gore invented
the Internet. It has provided consumers and corporations direct and indirect
access to information and devices, both local are remote, that continues to
enrich the understanding and awareness of our world while providing the ability
to sense and control well beyond our immediate reach.

There is a great deal about the IoT that has not changed. The ability to
communicate, connect, sense and actuate things is one of the most important
attributes of a functional IoT. Blended in with the promise and the hype of
“IoT everywhere, every day for everybody” is now a broad sense of new risk.
Part of these risk concerns are nothing new but in a broader applications
context, there are new risks that must be competently addressed. Regulators,
standards bodies, consumer protection advocates, consumers and industry are
clamoring to close gaps whether they be real or perceived.
So what’s changed? We will look at some of the fundamentals that are changing
the IoT and the new challenges, risks (and benefits) the evolution brings to
the product safety community.
