Regarding e-cigarettes, it’s not too difficult to fathom how compliance with IEC electrical safety standard may be presented as the product being “safe”.

Dan has the technical work correctly identified imo. IECEE CTL issued a Decision(DSH2115) that proposes the IEC60335-1 in the interim. This was affirmed by CTL in 2019 and IECEE WG29 in 2020. noting the TC61 development ongoing in Dan’s note. Decision DSH 2115 is available on the IECEE’s website. A broader or related issue was considered by IECEE management on the certification of ethically questionably products like e-cigarettes, weapons etc..(their terms, not mine) and it was referred to the IEC Conformity Assessment Board (CAB) to ensure their work is in line with IEC’s ethical codes and liability considerations. No idea if CAB did anything with this at their Nov2020 meeting "Chaotic times have a way of reordering reality” - wsj oped Bob Griffin 919 426 9565 [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> On 11Dec, 2020, at 09:49, Dan Roman <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> wrote: Hi Joe, TC 61 is indeed working on this. They are both in the “Approved for CD” stage. Our PSES friend and frequent presenter at PSES conferences Fiore Chiang (from UL I believe) is the project leader for -121. Yusuke Suzuki is the project leader for -120. You can follow the links above for more information and if you know someone on TC 61 they may be able to give you info on the drafts. Hello All: In 2018 here in the USA, UL published a Standard for Safety, UL-8139, “Electrical Systems of Electronic Cigarettes and Vaping Devices.” I’ve looked at the IEC web site to see whether a similar international standard has emerged, but so far I have not found one. Does anyone know whether such a standard is in the developmental stages within the IEC? In the meantime, the closest existing IEC standard that might be used for electrical safety of E-cigarettes appears to be IEC 60335 for “Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Safety.” Thanks, Joe Randolph Telecom Design Consultant Randolph Telecom, Inc. 781-721-2848 (USA) [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> http://www.randolph-telecom.com<http://www.randolph-telecom.com/> - ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message is from the IEEE Product Safety Engineering Society emc-pstc discussion list.
