If I were to mount an A axis on the table of my Bport clone, not only would
the rotation not be around Y=Z=0, it would vary depending on how I homed my
Y and Z axis. Even worse, if I set an offset on Y or Z, it would vary with
the offset. And I suppose that if I did some sort of tool length
compensation, it would vary with the length of the tool.

Something in the init file could tell AXIS how things were homed, but then
AXIS would have to depend on the interpreter to keep track of offsets and so
on (which I believe it already does).

...STUFF DELETED...

By displaying each point as X'Y'Z' = rotate(X,Y,Z,A), it would be
possible to show the effect of A-axis movements in the output, but
there are some questions about the "meaning" of an A axis that I don't
think are settled, mainly this one: The A axis causes rotation around a
line parallel to the X-axis, but it is not necessarily around the line
Y=Z=0. On one machine I have used, the center of rotation is closer to
Y=1.5 Z=2 or so.
