Ok, downloading ubunto distro as I'm writing this.
But I think you should find a more reliable way of disttributing emc -
ubuntu doesn't seem to be an answer - too hard for a novice user like me.

I think those two answers spell it out. Problems during the
install most likely have absolutely nothing to do with EMC,
and the limited number of EMC users and developers are not
the best source for help. Literally millions of people have
installed stock Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, so the Ubuntu community
has seen (and solved) far more install problems than we ever
will.

Once you have stock Ubuntu working well, then you can
easily install EMC2. As Stephen said, read section 2 of

If you have any problems at that point, by all means ask here.
