Hi - You are correct, the 5i20 by its self is not a complete solution but by attaching it to a 7i30 or some other PWM drive it makes it a good choice of most applications.
I am current using one on a machine with a 500W spindle and have only good things to say about it. I have in the past build my own L298 based stepper boards and can only compare to those as reference.
