EMC2.1 is fully capable of outputting a quadrature waveform to drive
steppers. To see the range of waveforms available, look at our PDF
documentation:

the documentation for "stepgen" starts at page 68 in my copy, and
waveform diagrams appear on pages 73, 74 and 75.
EMC2.1 is also capable of using two parallel ports.
For EMC2.1 systems, we recommend using Ubuntu. You can download an
installable live CD from http://linuxcnc.org/
