I'm using Bobcad/CAM, and I can't really recommend it, at least the 
version I
have.  But, in fact, most of the work I do doesn't use CAD drawings.  I 
have a bunch
of little C programs I use to create the G-code for simple operations 
(round pocket,
rectangular slot, etc.) and then splice them together if I am going to 
make more
than one.  I have some of these programs on my web page at
