My client (irssi - text mode) is always connected. It's run inside a virtual terminal (screen) to which I connect using ssh from a number of different machines. Beeing run on linux, even if someone sends me something bogus it won't affect me (freenode is one of the nice places where mostly devel related things are held. There are other IRC networks where mostly chats happen, and you can find your bunch of script kiddies there to annoy you).
