As usual it depends on the company you get, on the irc client you use
and on the OS you run.
Been present in #emc on irc.freenode.net for more than 2 years now, 
and never had a problem.

My client (irssi - text mode) is always connected. It's run inside a 
virtual terminal (screen) to which I connect using ssh from a number 
of different machines. Beeing run on linux, even if someone sends me 
something bogus it won't affect me (freenode is one of the nice places 
where mostly devel related things are held. There are other IRC 
networks where mostly chats happen, and you can find your bunch of 
script kiddies there to annoy you).
