Of course, you have to have an encoder on the spindle.
And, you have to provide a way to feed this encoder information
back to the computer.  We first demonstrated this capability at 
the 2006 CNC Workshop.  I demoed my mini-mill pretending to be a 
lathe at the 2007 NAMES show last month.  I had some strange 
driver/interface problems that are now fixed, and it works like 
a charm.

I have a set of config files on my web site that show how to do 
this using my universal PWM controller :

Without that hardware, you would need to assign parallel port 
pins for the encoder input and use the software encoder HAL 
component.
