How about using UnionFS (http://www.filesystems.org/project-unionfs.html) for this purpose? This would allow for a RO root system with some directories in a ramdisk, as well as a /home directory on the USB drive. Check out Slax, Morphix or even Knoppix (I believe) for an example of this. This way, we can probably build a reliable and fairly speedy system at the cost of a $25 stick.
