I just found this link: http://members.shaw.ca/swstuff/spindle-encoder.html
I may have to try this on my lathe. I am concerned about coolant getting into my current setup because there are no seals between the spindle shaft and encoder housing. I am not wild about the belt either. With my current encoder, I decided to take the shortest route to a decent encoder and fix it later if needed. I suppose if Hardinge had problems with coolant getting into the works, they would have fixed it, but I am half hoping that something goes wrong. Since my lathe was a CNC to start with, there were allot of issues that I didn't need to address. With my Bridgeport conversion I am finding that I am burning up loads of time designing mounts, brackets and what-not because I have a hard time finalizing a design. There are too many options, hence the saying "to finish a project, you have to shoot the engineers". Did you cast any parts for your lathe? I made a furnace a few years back, but I haven't assembled the rest of the bits needed to make molds. I may try to bug you about casting in the future. -- Kirk Wallace (California, USA http://www.wallacecompany.com/machine_shop/ Hardinge HNC lathe, Bridgeport mill conversion, doing XY now, Zubal lathe conversion pending) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- SF.Net email is sponsored by: The Future of Linux Business White Paper from Novell.
