A while back I proposed to Ron Ginger that I do a talk at Cabin Fever; he liked the idea, but I should run this by you folks to make sure I'll say the right stuff. After all, you've done the heavy lifting that makes it all work.
Last September I gave a talk about my Sherline CNC mill for the local Linux Users Group. These being computer geeks, I described the how-and-why of machining, gave a simple overview of CAD/CAM, covered what G-Code is & how one writes a program, discussed why real-time Linux is a Good Thing & how it works (the hook for that audience!), then did a demo of making a simple part (which actually worked!). The PDF of that talk is at: http://mhvlug.org/MonthlyMeetings/2007/09 It occurred to me that the talk would also be a nice fit for the Cabin Fever audience, after replacing the real-time Linux part (more-or-less slides 38-52) with a section about how & why I make simple 2-1/2 D repair parts. The hook is that this CNC stuff actually has useful, easy-to-do applications, with an overview of the whole process. I can lug my Sherline setup along and attempt a live-fire demo if that seems reasonable; I don't know what the facilities in the lecture room look like. I'll certainly bring a vacuum cleaner along, though. It takes about an hour to present, followed by the demo. Suggestions? Tomatoes?
