Gentlemen,
When trying to get the G&L up and running I found an opportunity.
The feedback from the servo motors to the AC amplifiers is a resolver
feedback.
The machine is 4 axis. All axes are linear. The machine is a post
mill. The Y axis moves up and down the post. The table motion is X and
Y. The quill is W. Pictures are on www.mpm1.com:8080.
The X, Y and Z axes have Sony scale feedback. The W axis (quill)
has a Dynapar encoder on the end of the W axis motor. The scale
feedback can be as fine as .000025 inch in A, B and Z quadrature. The
endoder is 1024 pulses in A, B and Z. I am not sure of the drive ratio
of of the W axis.
The opportunity is this. To get quadrature feedback into EMC2 from
the motors I will need a resolver to encoder converter or I will need
to install encoders on each motor on the X, Y and Z axes. I purchased
three converters, RD141S from AMCI. These introduce a 50 ms delay in
the feedback signal. Is this acceptable? I think, probably not.
My question is this. Do I need to install encoders on the motors?
    Questions, thoughts, comments welcome.
thanks
Stuart
