I'm just in the process of getting a laptop up and running for EMC2
(An itronix gobook, P3 850Mz) . Using the ubuntu live CD I had the
latency problems others are describing, every minute or so there was a
10ms peak!

However I decided to try a something a bit more up to date! With a
Debian Etch install, a home built 2.6.23.9 kernel with just the
hardware i needed, RTAI 3.6 and EMC2 2.2.3 all built from scratch, and
I get 12000ns latency reasonably reliably and no nasty glitches!

Ive got it hooked up to 3 routoutcnc stepper drivers
(http://www.routoutcnc.com/RoutoutStepper.htm) and it seems up to
driving them happily. So I'm not having problems with Parrallel port
levels.

I haven't got the cnc machine built yet, but it driving the steppers
on their own without problems.

Tim
