There are cards out there that simply provide I/O.  The Mazak at the CNC
workshop as a Motenc card as its primary servo card, and an AX5214H 48
channel I/O card for toolchanger stuff.  The AX5214 is an ISA card, but
there are probably PCI versions available.

EMC2 allows you to mix and match any combination of I/O devices, so you
don't have to use expensive servo cards if all you need is digital I/O.

If I remember we also used a parport breakout board from PMDX for it's charge 
pump and to watch the handwheel.  Seems like there were a couple other things 
we did with that.

John is absolutely right about the ability of HAL to ignore the source of a 
signal once it's read.  Guess he ought to be, he designed it that way.  Thanks
