This is really two separate problems.  Reversing the direction of travel 
of a motor is done by changing the sign of the scale, exactly as you did.

Reversing the effect of the keyboard arrows and/or the preview image is 
a separate issue involving the GUI.  I don't know if AXIS can do the 
"tool on top" style display that would be appropriate for your lathe.
