Another open loop makes my teeth hurt but you can easily save variable
values to the .var file.  All you'd need to do is edit the file you use
in your config and add a tool number variable.  Something like 1000 0 on
a line by itself at the top of the file would create a variable that
would be read in at startup and saved at shutdown.

You'd have to be certain that you update var 1000 every time you change
tools.
