Ian,  I think it's great that you would build your own driver.
But to do so is not for the sake of saving money.
Maybe as a learning excersize, but not to save money.

Once you figure in your time and effort, you won't beat the cost of an off the 
shelf unit as Dave has indicated below.

If your going to design & build your own then go all they way and start selling 
pcbs & kits.
Or maybe write an article for one of the electronics hobbyist magazines.
Then you will not save money, you will make money.
