This is usually a sign of incorrect step timings.  It might mean
your drivers occasionally step in the wrong direction if the step
pulse comes too soon after a direction change, or some other similar
infrequent problem.  Check the timings again, and re-run this program.
Sounds like you have a nice test case to use.
