I used a parallel port program that allowed setting parallel port pins.
I had a shell script loop the parallel port utility the number of times
needed to get to a position. There is no feed back, but I would
occasionally reset the home position by running against a stop. The
shell script could be interrupted by other processes, but this didn't
seem to matter much.
