You could use opencv ( http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/OpenCV/ ), and write 
a simple code to capture the image (or to do something more sophisticated). 
Check the cameras that are supported.

BTW, what kind of pick-n-place machine do you have, is it home made? Can you 
show some photos of it?
