Those chips need a special magnet; a disk, but magnetised perpendicular to
the normal direction.  I think this is listed on their site, and where you
can get them, but the seller of the magnets has a minimum order of $100 or
so (from memory).

The same chip and magnet is used by the reprap project to add cheap encoders
to the geared hobby motors they sell.  You can buy the kit with chip and
magnet from the reprap store for $20 -
