Why not use soft limits?  They don't hurt!  If you command a move that 
would exceed the machine's limits of travel, EMC will not even START the 
move, you get a message to that effect.

Absolutely true.  The only purpose for machine coords is for the 
machine's limits of travel, and the machine error compensation tables.
(May also be needed in kinematics calcs for non-cartesian machines.)

Yes, except for setting up the machine, I never see these, either.
