I have an EMC2 PC on my bench that I use for testing and development. It
is from the bottom of my stuff pile, meaning it's a Celeron 433 with
128mB of RAM. It seems to work okay for the bench, but I get 20-30,000ns
jitter with a periodic 400,000ns. Occasionally, I get real-time errors
in EMC2. I looked at the latency links on linuxcnc.org and played with
unloading some modules. Unloading pcspkr helped jitter on all of the
EMC2 PC's I tried. I unloaded some other modules that looked like they
might not be needed, but didn't note the effect, if any. I also plugged
in a USB device during the latency test, and got a dramatic result on
all of the PC's I tested (3, not a huge sample). I am curious about what
modules others on this list commonly remove. It seems to me that it
would be nice to have as part of the installation, or latency test, a
dialog that lets the user chose to correct the most common latency
issues. I also looked at the SMI material. Compiling a kernel module
looks like something I would only do if I had to, like eating beets and
lima beans. So, I'd kinda like to know if it's easier than I think, or
that it's worth the effort.

Another thought. Does anyone know of a motherboard with just a
processor, RAM and card slots? With this I could add the network, video
and parallel port board, and have no other hardware fluff. If one
doesn't exist, how hard would it be to make one? What about:
